34. The Prison With a Dark Past
Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, a prison from the Victorian era, has a reputation as one of Northern Ireland’s most haunted sites. Dubbed Europe’s Alcatraz, it housed around 25,000 inmates over 150 years, including men, women, and children. The prison was notorious for public executions, with many prisoners buried within its walls.
Though it closed in 1996, it’s said that the spirits of former inmates still haunt its corridors and iron walkways. For those intrigued by its dark history, Crumlin Road Gaol now offers a unique experience with daily tours, live concerts, and dining at its on-site restaurant. It’s also a venue for conferences and weddings.
