35 Times the English Language Was Unnecessarily Confusing

English is deceptively simple. Picture it: you’re sitting in English class. The teacher presents some straightforward rules for spelling and grammar and then talks about all the exceptions to the rules. It seems like all these rules exist to be broken. How can two words that are spelled the same be pronounced entirely differently? How can you tell when vowels make a long or short sound? It’s a bit overwhelming to think about, honestly. So, people took to the Internet to share the wildest examples of the English language being the absolute worst.

#1: Can You Say That Again?

A weird part of the English language is the fact that we can say the same word multiple times in a row, and it will still make perfect grammatical sense. These comments give two extreme examples of this; any native English speaker would have to pause a second before getting it!

English can have what’s called “double words” because of the past perfect tense. The past perfect tense is used when talking about more than one thing that happened in the past. It can get super confusing, as seen in the comment above, because the earliest past occurrence always goes first. This poster used to have good faith, and it had had no effect on the outcome. Yeah… we’re confused too.
