Papua New Guinea is a country in the Oceania. The country operates a constitutional parliamentary democracy.  The population is over 5 million. Here are other random facts about Papua New Guinea that you will find interesting.

There are five major ethnic groups in the country. These are Melanesian, Papuan, Negrito, Micronesian, and Polynesian. Melanesian Pidgin serves as the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea. English is spoken by less than 3% of the population, and there are about 820 languages spoken in the country.

1. PEOPLE HIGHLY SENSITIVE

The people love and are proud of their culture. But they are generally very sensitive in matters of culture, they get easily shamed even in trivial matters.

2. NOT CHATTING OFFENSIVE

Papuan people love greeting and the act to a fault.  But more than that, they love the chatting that usually follow greeting.  It is offensive to walk by and greet without stopping to chat.  They view it as not being valued.

3. INDIRECT CRITICISM PREFERRED

Preserving friendship matters a lot to Papuans. For this reason, they hate frontal confrontation.  To criticize a person, for example, they do it through the person’s colleague or friend.  It is offensive to do it face to face.

4. NEVER AVOID EYE CONTACT

Never avoid eye contact when talking with them.  Talk with them without looking at them in the eye, and they would take you to be sly, unreliable.

5. RARE TIME CONSCIOUS

Minus business and flights, almost nothing else happens on time!  Life is laid back and things happen when they happen.  In fact, anyone who values his time so much is viewed as unfriendly.

6. WOMEN HAVE NO STATUS

On the number six facts about Papua New Guinea, women have no status at all and they never challenge men in public, they are mainly relegated to the home.  Even foreign women are expected to observe this.

7. NEVER POINT AT POEPLE

Papuans try not to hurt others. One way to hurt people is pointing at them when talking to someone else. Pointing at people who are not part of your conversation is an oddity that must be avoided. The person so pointed at feels he is the subject of your conversation and takes offense.

8. THE BIRDS OF PARADISE

Papua New Guinea really is a bird watchers paradise. There are types of birds here that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

 

9. TWO COOKINGS DAILY

It is either that preservation of cooked food poses a problem or that people prefer daily freshly cooked food.  In the villages, cooking two meals a day is the order. Foods are either boiled or roasted.

10. ONE FUNNY FOOD TABOO

Papuan people have a number of food or eating taboos. It is a taboo for a son in-law to eat food in the presence of his mother in-law.

11.NO DRINKING AGE

To drink alcohol or not seems really to be a matter left to individuals to decide. In the country, there is no legal drinking age!  And even other laws are difficult to enforce.
