Five Polish sailors are presently held captive by kidnappers who attacked their cargo ship off the Nigeria coast. According to the Polish Foreign Minister, Witold Waszczykowski, while addressing the news conference on Friday, the kidnappers are yet to make any demands and that Poland is presently liaising with Nigerian authorities since they are not to get involved directly unless if asked to so.
The Minister went ahead to state firmly that Nigeria is a sovereign state and should be accorded due respects. While inspecting the scene, it was also noted that they was no traces of blood to indicate any of them victims being injured on the process.
The ship is operating under the Cyprus flag, five crews including the captain and officers were kidnapped whereas the rest crew and 11 people were left on the ship which suffered some damages during the attack.
The ship is currently off Nigeria coast at roughly 30 miles away with the operators making plans to get it back to port. It is also said that the area which the ship was taken to was not known to be sea pirate haven or prone.
The Polish Maritime Minister, Marek Grobarczyk said that the safety procedures of all Polish companies operating in the area would now be reviewed to ensure sailor’s safety.
