
Drive-in restaurants used to be popular. Getting your license, ordering food at the drive-in, and having a roller-skating waitress deliver your burgers and shakes was a rite of passage. But limited parking and the convenience of drive-thrus meant that many drive-in restaurants closed their doors or changed their model. While franchises like Sonic keep drive-ins alive, many people miss the variety of drive-ins of their youth. So, we’re here to look at nostalgic drive-thrus that are no longer around, have changed their model, or aren’t as big as they used to be.
#1: Dog n Suds (1953-Present, But Limited)
Dog n Suds served hot dogs with sudsy root beer, though it had other items than its name suggests. Nowadays, it’s limited to the Illinois area, where it originated. But back in the day, it was everywhere. In the ’70s, there were over 650 locations, but as the drive-thru became more popular, the dog’s day had ended.
