41. Metropolis (1927)
Metropolis is an old film. So old it came out before sound was created for cinema; a silent film. Perhaps that is why, in a rare departure from the other movies on this list, the novel was intentionally written to accompany the film rather than as an inspiration for it beforehand.
When first published in 1925, the book even contained screenshots of the film in order to hype it up for its 1927 release. It is one of the first feature-length science fiction films in history and was seen as a pioneer of the genre.
