7. The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is by far the most famous and influential epic in the fantasy genre. It was written by scholar J.R.R Tolkien, with the first novel in the series, the Fellowship of the Ring, published in 1954.

Although there had been some attempts to adapt the series to the big screen, the movies that would resonate with its audiences were not released until 2001, with Peter Jackson at the helm. The movies have their critics, but both the book series and the film trilogy have become masterpieces in their own right.
