One interesting part of the English language is the fact that letters can sound different depending on where they are in a word, or even what other letters they are next to. A letter can have a hard sound (like the c in “carbon”) or it can have a soft sound (like the c in “cited”). It all depends on the context, and it can be quite confusing indeed.
The proper noun “Pacific Ocean” has three c’s in it, and each one is pronounced differently. That happens because of English spelling rules and the other letters that are next to the c’s in the word. So mind-boggling! We have a soft, hard, and “sh”-sounding “c” all in one phrase. We bet you never noticed that before!
