Pakistan is a country in Southern Asia.  It shares borders with Afghanistan, India, China, and Iran. The population is put at about 197 million. The capital is Istanbul. Here are more Random facts about Pakistan that you would love to know.

The five main ethnic groups are Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun, Baloch, and Muchajir. The country’s constitution grants freedom of religion.  But about 97% of the population adheres to the Islamic faith.

1. THE LANGUAGE QUESTION

Two languages, Urdu and English, seem to be in competition in Pakistan.  Urdu is the official language. But strangely, English is what is mainly used for government and commerce.

2. FRIDAY IS SACRED

Fix appointment carefully in Pakistan.  On Friday, everything shuts down!  The day is considered the Islamic holy day.  Fix any appointment on Friday and you will most certainly be disappointed.

3. LARGE FAMILIES

Family is extended to include more than you can ever imagine.  Extended families include:

  • Immediate relatives
  • Distant relatives
  • Tribe members
  • Friends and neighbors

The Pakistani extended family system is clearly one of the largest kinds.

4. NEPOTISM IS VIRTUE

In Pakistan, nepotism is not taken as the dictionary presents it. In fact, it is taken entirely in the opposite context.

Pakistanis view nepotism as a virtue.  It is the guarantee that you can hire and work with people you trust.

5. THE NO-ASK QUESTION

When you greet a Pakistani, ask about anything else. But remember this: you do not ask a Pakistani man about his wife and other female relatives.  It is viewed as an oddity, a taboo.

6.  SOCIETY IS HIERACHICAL

They are a hierarchical society. Elders and those with position are usually given the best seats and choicest cuts of meat at occasions.

7.  “STATUS-INDICATOR” NAMES

In Pakistan, names serve for more than just a means of distinguishing one person from another. Names usually include one that denotes a person’s class, tribe, occupation, or other status indicators.

8.  NEVER GIVE WOMEN FLOWERS

Pakistanis love flowers, as do all people of the world. But two things you must know about flowers in Pakistan are:

  • Men must not give flowers to women
  • White flowers are only used for weddings

9. THE RITUAL LIE

If a man gives a gift to a woman, he must customarily say it is from his wife, mother, sister, or some other female relative.  If he does not, the act would be viewed as odd.

10. RITUAL LATE ARRIVAL

For dinner invitations, guests are expected to arrive 15 minutes late. For party invitations, guests are expected to arrive even as late as one hour!  Being late, therefore is good.
