8. When You Look into the Abyss, the Abyss Might Look Back
Submerged in the Mediterranean’s depths near San Fruttuoso, Italy, lies the original “Christ of the Abyss,” an 8-foot-tall statue embodying both reverence and mystery. Commissioned in 1954 by diver Duilio Marcante to honor his friend Dario Gonzatti, the statue presents a haunting underwater spectacle.
With arms outstretched and eyes gazing skyward, time has draped it in algae and corrosion, enhancing its ghostly aura. A 2003 restoration briefly brought it ashore for repairs, including a new hand lost to an anchor’s mishap.
