46. The Monk Who Never Left
The Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, isn’t just an architectural and religious landmark; it’s also the center of one of the country’s most famous ghost stories. The cathedral’s resident specter, known as “The Monk,” was first reported in 1924 by Bishop Marie Gleditsch, who described a ghostly figure with a bloody gash across its throat.
Since then, there have been numerous accounts of mysterious chanting and organ music echoing through the cathedral at night. The legend of the monk is shrouded in controversy, with some historians asserting that no monastic order was ever associated with the Nidaros Cathedral. Despite this, the tales of the monk persist.
