Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen volcano is a mesmerizing blend of danger and beauty. Its Java summit releases extraordinary amounts of sulfuric gases that ignite upon contact with air, reaching scorching temperatures above 1,000°F. In a dazzling display, these gases sometimes condense into liquid sulfur, cascading down in an ethereal blue flow.
Although the captivating blue fires are most visible in darkness, the volcano’s constant sulfur burn fills the air with sulfur dioxide. Nearby, a crater lake mirrors this otherworldly scene, its waters turned an acidic green from hydrochloric acid, creating a landscape both alluring and ominous.
