End of Blockbuster
At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster employed 84,300 people worldwide, including about 58,500 in the United States and about 25,800 in other countries, and had 9,094 stores in total, with more than 4,500 of these in the US. As big as it was, it wasn’t enough to stem the effects of Video on Demand and Netflix’s model of mail-order DVDs. Blockbuster had incurred $4 billion in losses since 2001. By March of 2009, Blockbuster executives realized they were facing bankruptcy and by 2010 they went under.
