He hadn’t spoken to his family in 8 years, and so was nervous about a reunion, as things had been strained even before he left for Mexico. Family is family, however, and they were keen to welcome Alvarenga back with open arms. 

After 11 days in the hospital in Ebon, doctors judged that he was well enough to travel, and he flew to El Salvador, funded by the United States Government, to be reunited with his family, and where he discovered that he had a daughter that he had never seen.
