Every country has its own unique expressions, and as we’ve established, Americans are no different. One commonly used expression is “this, that, and the third.” This saying is rather comical if you ask us, but it’s also surprisingly fun to say. Why wouldn’t they just say “first, second, and third?” More importantly, what is this expression getting at?

“This, that, and the third” is generally an American’s way of shortening a story. Or, they’re flat out lying and aren’t creative enough to fill in the blanks with made up details. Yet, asking where this expression came from is legitimate, because, like many other expressions, no one really knows its origin.
