On Black Friday 2024, shoppers spent a record $10.8 billion online. The slow death of retail stores continues, as many stores can’t offer the same deals as Amazon and other large companies. And when people are shopping in retail stores, they’re no longer shopping at these 24 stores. We’re looking at 24 stores that the Baby Boomer and Gen X generations may remember but aren’t around anymore.
#1: Woolworth’s
Woolworth’s has a long history, as it was founded back in 1879. It was one of the first popular “five-and-dime” stores, back when a dime could buy you a lot! If this business had played its cards right, it could have been Walmart before Walmart.
Instead, Woolworth’s closed in 1997 due to competition from other bargain stores. However, that wasn’t the end of their story. In its later years, the store focused a lot more on athletic clothing and became Foot Locker in 2001, a store that is still around today.
