Washing clothes is no easy task—it never has been. People used to have to toil over a tub of boiling water and a washboard to get their clothes clean. Thankfully, today, we have electric washing machines and dryers that do most of the work for us. But when did this nifty invention come on the scene?

The first electric washing machine was created and sold by the Hurley Machine Company. The machine was called Thor, and it was patented in 1910. This photo was taken around that time. As we can see, this woman’s life just got a whole lot easier. She’s relaxing and even has time to catch up on some reading! We promise to never complain about doing laundry again.
