#25: Earliest Vaccines
Vaccines are truly a modern-day miracle. They immunize us against harmful and sometimes deadly diseases. There is no doubt that invention changed the world. But what was the very first vaccine? Well, it was invented earlier than you might think. We associate vaccines with modern healthcare, but the first vaccine was developed in the late 1790s.
Dr. Edward Jenner developed the very first vaccine for smallpox when he demonstrated that a small dose of cowpox created immunity against smallpox. Our modern-day smallpox vaccine is completely different than Dr. Jenner’s early version, but it kickstarted the scientific innovation that led to many more immunizations that exist and protect people today.
