29. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Originally published as a novella by Stephen King with the title Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, it was part of a 1982 collection called Different Seasons. It tells the story of a banker who is convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover, his time in prison, and the lead-up to his escape.
It is also about his friendship with fellow inmate, Red. The novella was adapted to film in 1994 to great critical acclaim and has had a lingering influence on culture and cinema ever since. Many people have claimed the film completely changed their life.
