We have five vowels (sometimes six) in the English language. It seems like we have way more than that, though, when you consider how many sounds each vowel can make in a word! This example posted by someone with a hilarious gif really captures how frustrating English can be for us all.

Words like “said” and “laid” end in the same vowel combos, but they sound completely different. On top of that, they go on to point out that “said” rhymes with “bread” but not “bead,” and at this point, we’re just really overwhelmed, and we don’t know what’s going on. Make it make sense!
