Perry
Another popular drink, although perhaps not as prevalent at breakfast, was Perry. Perry is made from fermented pears and originally came from France. Pears were a very common fruit in the colonies, and governors encouraged new settlers to plant pear trees in their colonies.
The plentiful nature of the fruit meant that this drink was an easier tipple to make at home for very little money. These days, apple-based cider, rather than pear-based perry is more popular on both sides of the Atlantic, and we’re not sure why. Sometimes these things just become more or less fashionable for no real reason.
