There was nothing like eating a handful of Pop Rocks and feeling them fizz in your mouth. This was due to the carbon dioxide in the candy, which is perfectly safe to eat and is still eaten to this day. But back in the day, people thought this candy would lead to an untimely death.

Most kids who grew up in the ’70s and ’80s heard that the kid who played Little Mikey in those Life cereal commercials died a Pop Rocks and Coke bender, with the idea that this combination would lead to you going pop! It’s not true; the actor who played Little Mikey, John Gilchrist, is alive and well. But the way people told this story with the utmost sincerity made most of us wait a while after eating some Pop Rocks before taking a swig of Coke.
