#1: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Horror stories for children sound like a contradiction. Why would you want to tell little kids horror stories? But alas, the children’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book series was quite popular during the 1980s and 90s. Written by Alvin Schwartz, it had three books: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones, published between 1981 and 1991.
Parents today might be horrified by the idea of reading horror stories to their kids at bedtime, but who said you couldn’t? Okay, we can see why it might be a little controversial. It was even banned during the day from some school libraries.
