Albino hairless rats have red eyes, but the majority of hairless rats have black eyes. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, hairless rats are the result of a genetic mutation that prevents the thymus gland from developing. The lack of thymus gland causes these rats to be severely immune-deficient and lose their hair after birth.
