The Final Frontier of Female Representation?
Hirsutism affects as many as 600 million women worldwide, yet they are rarely seen on a stage or big screen except in the role of a bearded lady sideshow. The women of today didn’t grow up idolizing a bearded Disney princess. Still, thanks to brave women around the world and on social media, female facial hair is gaining more representation in the media for the next generation.
@nova.starchild on Tik-Tok explains, “along with circus comments, I get a lot of comments from people who like my aesthetic, who think I’m a cool person, who compare me to a female dwarf, like a fantasy dwarf. These are the only forms of representation that women with beards have, which are dehumanizing. As long as we’re continuing to be used as costumes and fantasy creatures, people are never going to see people like me as real humans or women.”
