In order for the father to get inside the elevator, he will need to first pull himself up the cable until he is on the next floor, and then he can use his fortunate pen to pry open the door (which was set up earlier in the film, obviously). There are many stumbles and falls along the way, but in the end, everything turns out the way it was supposed to.
