Niagara Scow
Here’s an interesting piece of Niagara-related history. Those standing aboard a ship at the basin of the waterfall might not be aware, but they could be just moments away from disaster at any time. Back in the day, boats would float on the upper part of the falls, taking passengers pretty close to the retreats and overhang.
The Niagara Scow, one of these passenger vessels stationed at Horseshoe Falls, actually got swept away by the current. It didn’t drop, but its wreckage is pretty close to the fall’s overhang. In 2019, harsh winds shifted the 100-year-old remains, forcing it onto its side.
