Historic Mills District
Here, we can catch a glimpse of the past and see just how industrious Niagara Falls were. Before striking a deal with the tourism industry, hydroelectric plants were built near the fall’s edge, allowing the turbines to harness the power of freefalling water. This system created more than enough energy for the surrounding homes, and more plants were built to provide for the growing community.
Initially, the New York government wasn’t opposed to the industrialization of Niagara Falls. If they could create renewable energy for the entire city, no harm could be done. That is, until they realized that the “trickling” waterfall threatened the city’s tourism.
