The pandemic has made waves in changing millions of lives all across the world for better or worse, with differences in how society, finances, interactions, and so much more function as pieces or a whole. It’s been a hard time for so many of us, and there have also been plenty of changes or difficulties for pieces of society such as celebrities and those considered to have high standings in our world.
Celebrities have an entire culture behind their popularity, existence, and money that influences their lifestyles, but major events like this pandemic have disrupted this. Here’s some information on how the pandemic has changed celebrity culture for those that are interested or curious.
Many have watched celebrities throughout their lives but were given more exposure to the subject when the pandemic forced more people to be working from home, out of work, sheltering in place, or otherwise finding more time at home on their hands. It became quickly evident there was a big difference between celebrities in the pandemic and normal individuals.
People watched celebrities talk about staying at home or doing what was right for the pandemic, but realized how easy it was for them to say when they weren’t suffering in the ways that families and working-class citizens were. They sheltered in place in massive or dream homes, still made money or had money to spare for the hard times, were often still visiting family and friends during a stay at home orders, and otherwise were beginning to show things most fans weren’t taking nicely.
It sparked more of the already beginning dismantling of celebrities’ power over people and society. People realized this difference and spoke up about it. How was it fair to say stay at home then not listen, or talk about how great staying at home is when they had a vastly privileged experience of this? Sparking upset in millions of people doesn’t exactly go well, as many celebrities have now learned.
It wasn’t necessarily celebrities’ actions that began this fight but more so the overall hypocrisy and wage or access gap that made most people angry, however, plenty of celebrities suffered as it began.
This led to fans scrutinizing celebrities’ every move, the popular idea of “eat the rich” coming into the scene yet again with plenty of lashing out at celebrities that were hypocritical in their statements or actions during pandemic times as well as decreasing support for most celebs in general. People pointed out those raising money for charities weren’t even trying to pitch their own millions of dollars into the plan and instead of begging fans, misconduct by many celebs has been called out quickly by watchers, and much more.
This dismantlement of celebrities doesn’t seem to be doing anything but picking up speed, which is worrisome for celeb culture but empowering for everyday individuals suffering heavily from the influence, wage gap, or other cause and effect pieces of society or wealth in our culture that can negatively impact individual lives.
How celebrities and fame culture shifts during and after the times of the pandemic will have a major impact on what we see or don’t see of celebrities in the future as well as how those celebs will continue in life down the road. It’s been a tumultuous time for those on all different standings in society, but learning about those that we look up to can be an interesting, relieving, distracting, or otherwise slightly helpful practice for some. It’s certainly been a time of uprise as well as a downfall for so many.
Nobody can definitively say what will happen for celebrity culture in the wind-down of this pandemic as well as its aftermath, but this information gives you an idea of what has happened so far.
