Ralph Lauren started his working life as a clerk at Brooks Brothers. But it was while attending his first polo match, with all its upper-class sensibilities, that would have the biggest effect on him. He left Baruch College in Manhattan after only two years to create a high-class, elegant brand, which would eventually become Polo Ralph Lauren. In 1972, Lauren created a short-sleeve cotton shirt in 24 colors with the company’s logo— a polo player – which became the brand’s signature look. Lauren took the company public in 1997. He has an estimated worth of $8 billion.
