This is a mystery that needs to be solved. All of the evidence must be taken into account. The garden gnome was whole earlier in the day, but now he’s broken and sitting next to the package that arrived later.
The damaged item can be attributed to either the box or the delivery person. Perhaps they kicked it over when setting the box down, or maybe they dropped the box on top of the gnome and then moved it to cover their tracks. In any case, it’s a casualty of shipping.
