Natalie’s character wasn’t even supposed to exist. However, while the producers and actors were researching living styles for the show at Westlake School for Girls, they decided to add her.
Charlotte Rae, the actress playing Mrs. Garrett, met Mindy Cohn and was captivated by her performance–in particular, her comic timing and quick wit. So much so that when it came time to create the character of Natalie, Charlotte made sure Mindy got the role (despite not having any prior acting experience).
