Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher are almost always at odds with each other throughout season four. We’re informed that the Queen looks down on Thatcher, coming from a background of poverty, while Thatcher has no interest in wasting her time following the Royal Family’s tedious rules. There is evidence to support this claim outside of the show- one book suggests they “met and disliked each other on sight” before beginning a war against each other, both politically and personally.
In her memoir, Thatcher denied engaging in any confrontational behavior while the Queen attended her former prime minister’s funeral. This was the first funeral of a Prime Minister she’d attended since Winston Churchill’s.
