Fact Checking What The Crown Got Right – And What It Didn’t – About Charles and Diana

November 12, 2019 by Michael Franklin

Lord Mountbatten Sent a Letter to Charles About Settling Down – Unproven

The fourth season of the show features Charles Dance as Lord Louis “Dickie” Mountbatten and examines his bond with his great-nephew Prince Charles. Although he was Uncle Philip’s uncle, Mountbatten essentially served as a grandfather to Charles, and they were apparently very close–an aspect of their relationship that is faithfully depicted in the show. Also accurately portrayed is the Irish extremists’ assassination of the aging royal. On the eve of his demise, he advises Charles to find a “well-tempered girl with no past who’ll follow the rules.”

Although there’s no concrete evidence, it’s widely believed that Mountbatten wrote a letter to Charles telling him to “sow his wild oats” before getting married.
