As far away as possible
Upon finishing the painting, Van Gogh immediately hated it and took no further part in its existence. He never signed his name to it in hopes that people would forget about it. However, he did describe the painting accurately in a letter to his brother.
It was this letter combined with two years of chemical and artistic analysis that finally gave experts clarity over what they were observing. The painting can now go back on display for everyone to see again.
