Homeland of Chess
India is renowned as the land of chess. The people of India refer to the game as “Chaturanga,” which literally translates to “four divisions of an army” — infantry, cavalry, chariots, and elephants. Indians with their names etched on the walls of Chess’ Hall of Fame abound.
India has 66 Grand Masters, 20 Woman Grand Masters, 125 International Masters, 42 Woman International Masters, and over 33,000 rated players as of September 2000, according to FIDE. Tihaya may occasionally have to play chess with her spouse.
