Diamonds aren’t as rare and valuable as people think
Though often thought to be rare, diamonds are found more frequently than other gemstones. The hardest material on our planet, they’re excellent at cutting glass and can resist scratches better than any substance.

The value of diamonds increased in the public imagination due to De Beers and its very successful advertising campaign. Once the company set up large-scale diamond mines in South Africa, it convinced customers that engagement rings should always have a diamond to raise the stone’s price.
