Two birthdays
South Koreans celebrate two birthdays. The first of which is their Korean Birthday, which they celebrate on the Lunar New Year. The second is their actual birthday. Basically, everyone in the country shares at least one birthday with each other, which probably creates a greater sense of community across the country.
To celebrate their Lunar New Year birthday, Koreans will eat a soup dish called tteokguk, alongside rice cakes. The rice cakes are a symbol of purity and bringing good fortune for an entire year. This tradition is so common that if you want to ask a person their age, you can simply ask them how many bowls of tteokguk they’ve eaten.
