But a very important point to be aware of is to be adequately prepare yourself before making your intentions to marry an Edo lady known, her parents especially if you are non Edo indigene. This would enable you cut down some so many expenses of paying multi visits to your in-laws because of not planning ahead for the requirements.
This aspect of advance preparations is to be emphasized because the more readily you are in giving what your in-laws asks of you, the more easier it is for them to cut down on excesses because it gives them some quick run down of your abilities in taking care of them and their daughter after the marriage celebrations.
While it is true that Edo state is rich in traditions which definitely cost much money to perform and observe, when they notice that their in-laws to be has enough money to throw around publicly, they usually switch into a conservative mode probably not to allow their son in-law to squander it freely on the people…though this is rarely mentioned publicly, ….. just to let you know that I have had some close contacts with them!
So during this very first visit, every other underground protocols duly observed in terms of preparations e.t.c. Once everyone is seated, the bride’s family then entertains their visitors with drinks and kola nuts while sitting opposite themselves.
After the kola nuts are broken and eaten, the groom’s spokesman will now stand up and reveal the purpose of their visit and makes a proposal on behalf of their son to marry one of their daughters while he presents as gifts, drinks and kola nuts to the bride’s family.

The bride’s father or someone who is representing him would now call the lady and asked her if she knows the visitors and his family? Thereafter he will proceed by telling her the purpose of their coming and asks if she agrees to their proposal, if yes, that signifies the acceptance of the drinks presented but if No, that ends it there.
The answers are usually Yes! After the bride’s family accepts the the offer, a list would now be giving to the groom’s family and thereafter the bride’s family will now present food and drinks to everyone.
