U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Marie Harf said Boko Haram increased attacks in the north recently could be as result of the upcoming election in the country.
Marie Harf, urges for the the continuity of the February 14 election irrespective of the violence that have killed thousands of Nigerians in the North, saying that Boko Haram are doing all these to stir up tensions in the country.
"There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties. "We do believe the election is a factor,'' Harf told a daily briefing.
"Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, use political issues or sensitivities to try to en flame tensions.
"We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,'' she noted.
