Louis Offor (BENIN CITY) — Today the 7th of January, 2015 – the students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have blocked the Ugbowo-Lagos express road with burning tires on one side while a city transport bus otherwise known as “Comrade Bus” was set on ablaze sending plumes of smoke into the air.
I was in a vehicle headed that way but the driver of the vehicle was asked to reverse so his car won’t suffer the same fate as that of the comrade bus.
However, being curious to know
the crux of the trouble, i got down to take these snap shots from afar. On enquiry into what could have led to this uproar from the students, I learnt it was a spillover from the action of the state government in an incident yesterday to demolish a house purportedly belonging to the immediate past VC of the University.
It was further learnt that the house that was demolished is the VC’s lodge and not the former VC – Professor Oshodin’s private residence as initially been rumored. It is however being hoped that the situation doesn’t degenerate into something uncontrollable as the University authority might be held liable.
In a similar move yesterday, It was also gathered the University’s SUG president led other students to the banks within the school’s premises beating up security men and ripping of the pictures of Governor Oshiomole placed inside the walls of the banking halls.
As at the time of filing this report, the traffic situation on the Ugbowo-Lagos road was still unsettled as most motorists were made to go back owing to the actions of the protesting students.
