Soldiers kill 2 women in Plateau


Two women were allegedly shot dead in Heipang, District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Council of Plateau State, by soldiers and members of the Special Task Force saddled with the responsibility of maintaining peace in the state.

Newsmen gathered that there was accusation in the past of military involvement in killings in the area even as the community was protesting against mounting of check points around the area.

Investigation also revealed that, there was an attack on the community, which led to the discovery of a military identity card by the villagers in the area, which also culminated in the protest.

Confirming the incident in Jos, the Chairman of Barkin, Ladi Local Government Council, Emmanuel Loman, who spoke on telephone, said a soldier from the STF shot to death two women, who were protesting the incessant attacks and killings in their communities.

According to him, there was disagreement between the protesting women and the soldiers, who were mounting check points in the area as the women moved to their shops across the road, a soldier from the STF, met them inside their shop and shot them at a close range. Loman also added that a middle-aged man, who was also beaten to stupor by the same soldier, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

It was also gathered that the two women killed were Victoria Bitrus and Abishak Solomon.
Abishak was said to be holding her baby in her hands during the incident. Spokesman of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis, Captain Ikediche Iweha, in a reaction, told newsmen that no woman was shot dead by soldiers in the area.
According to him, there was a directive from their headquarters of the need to review check points in the area.

According to him, while STF personnel arrived in the area to review the check point as well as mount another one, some groups, mainly women and youths, mobilised themselves and were busy destroying the check point being put together by the STF personnel.

He added that in the process, there was a gun shot from the crowd which hit two people. He appealed to members of the community not to take the law into their hands, but to show understanding to enable STF serve them better.
It was gathered that the riot policemen that were attached to the STF in Heipang, had been withdrawn by the STF headquarters.
