The rise of new media over traditional media

The rise of the new media over traditional media is among the keynote discussion today in the ongoing World internet conference taking place in Wuzhen, China.  According to CCTV news report monitored by Constative News, most news website are experiencing large increase in the number of people that access news through the internet on daily basis.

Some of the news apps developed by the new media news platforms have been downloaded in tens of millions, confirming the popularity of the new media over the traditional media, while the traditional news media consumption keep dwindling.

The significance of China hosting the World internet day, the recent breakthrough of Alibaba, pulling off the biggest IPO in the world’s history, and Huawei becoming the biggest telecom infrastructure manufacturer in the world, these puts China as one of the world’s biggest players on the internet. Therefore, a worthy host of the world’s biggest internet conference.

China currently boasts of more than 600 million (641,601,070) internet users and expected to grow to more than 800 million within the next 3 years, making it the number one country  in the world with the highest internet users.

The United States of America and India are second and third respectively at more than 200 million (279,834,232 and 243,198,922) each. Nigeria has the world’s highest percentage growth of internet users, 16% from last year with the total users of about 67,101,452 as at today 20th November, 2014.

Internet has come to stay in Nigeria, we hold the 8th position of the countries with the highest number of internet users in the world ahead of United Kingdom and France who occupies 9th and 10th positions respectively. Nigeria is the biggest economy in Africa, but how come we are not invest in internet despite the capacity it holds to change the world?

As we monitor the ongoing internet conference in China, we hope that in the near future, we’ll have our own internet base company that will be competing favorably with some of the best in the world. It doesn’t matter how we started, everyone started from the scratch!
