Why Nigeria stopped US military training – FG

December 5, 2014 by Kelly Davies 1 Comment

It was in the news few days back that the U.S cancelled the training of Nigerian Army battalion, which attracted different reactions from the people.

The Federal Government has however, came up with the reason for the cancellation, which it says, was due to logistic problems.

Nigerian government said that it didn’t cancel the training just like that, but it was due to the conditions placed on them by the U.S, which to them, is not healthy for the security of lives and property of its citizens, especially those in the northern east region where the Islamic sect has been causing havoc.

The conditions, according to them, includes withdrawing of some military equipment from the battle field, so that the Americans could use them to train the soldiers.

Mr. Mike Omeri, the Cordinator of the National Information Center, made this known during a routine briefing on security situation in the country, stating that the government is not ready to risk the lives of its citizens at the hands of the insurgents simply for training soldiers. That is one of the major reasons why Nigeria stopped the US military training of its soldiers.

However, Omeri maintained that the two countries were not at variance as being insinuated by some people in the country. “Nigeria and America have strong military relation till date. It’s still ongoing and strong,” he said, disclosing that Nigerian soldiers had concluded two phases of the training out of the three.

Omeri explained that the third phase had to do with logistical components which the Americans did not provide but instead relied on Nigerian Military equipments, which was currently in use in the troubled states.

I heard about this news few days ago and I ask myself why can’t we Nigeria train our soldiers by ourselves according to the traditional and conditions of this country?, I think Nigeria soldiers should be train in their father’s land than going to another country for training.
