Poultry Farming in Nigeria is probably one of the most lucrative in the world especially when it is setup and managed properly. The poultry farmers we currently have in Nigeria are not even enough and may probably not going to be enough even in the next ten years! This aspect of livestock farming presents one of the finest opportunity for smart thinking entrepreneurs to make good money within the shortest period of time possible. The reason is largely because of the quick maturity of chickens.
With over 160 Million consumers in the country who buys poultry products on daily basis in Nigeria, the market is always here. So, the issue is not about the market, it’s about the product.
I have written number of articles on poultry rearing on this website which you can find the links below:
How to start small scale poultry farming
Feasibility study on poultry farming in Nigeria
How to start a poultry farm on demand
PDF eBook on Poultry Farming in Nigeria
How to build low cost poultry pen for Local Farmers
This very post will take more critical look at the business and how entrepreneurs who are interested in this business in Nigeria could start easily without wasting much time and resources. This tutorial is simple and straight to the point. It is written based on practical experience – every other articles that talks about poultry farming in Nigeria on the internet is probably copied from this. Take your time and read through and ask me questions if you have any. I’m online to answer your questions.
Anyone can engage in poultry business, it doesn’t matter your educational or financial background, you can start at any level and grow as big as you want with time. The most important thing is that you are interested in starting somewhere. Some people find it convenient to start with 500 bird while others start with 5,000 brids, you can always grow no matter the number you started with.
This articles will focus on how to start small and grow big which I think will interest anyone with limited financial capacity who wants to start small without involving much risks.
Like I said before, one of the factors that make poultry business ideal business is because chickens grows very fast. Unlike goats that takes 2 to 3 years to mature, a chicken can be ready for the market within 28 weeks from birth. That is why it is considered ideal business for loan takers who may actually invest the loan and within 30 to 40 weeks, they may start paying back through the money realized from sells. Now, let’s look at the profit from this business.
Profit potential in poultry Farming Business
1. Chicken do reproduce fast and in large numbers
Average healthy Layers lays egg almost everyday or at least 4 times in a week. Some Breeds can lay as much as 325 eggs in a year and take 21 days to hatch. This means that technically a Layer is capable of producing another chicken twice in three days.
So, if you have 500 healthy layers of good breeds (such as California white) they are capable of reproducing a whooping 12,000 chicks within 40 days!
2. Chicken grows very fast
Within 21 days, the egg is hatched and within 28 weeks, they are ready for the market. That means a farmer may start making his money in just 34 weeks after successfully setting up his farm and whatever returns he make could be doubled in a year base on this calculation. However, they could be mortality sometimes but the mortality rate can be greatly reduced through proper management.
3. Chicken sells at a very good price
A fully grown healthy chicken sells between 2,000 to 2,500 naira in Nigeria. Therefore, if you produce 12,000 chickens in your farm, you will be making N24 million by the time they are completely sold.
4. Egg market in Large too
Apart from the chicken, the egg is another money of it’s own. A crate of eggs sells for N500 – N550 for smaller eggs and N600 – N650 for bigger ones. Each crate contains 30 eggs. Therefore, if you have 500 layers that produces 12,000 pullet in a month and decides to sell all, you will be making N200,000 to N260,000 monthly.
As you can see, the profit in poultry business is mouth watering and the turn over time is fantastic as well, but the big question now is how to start.
How Your Poultry Farming Should Look Like
Draw out your effective business plan. Poultry business plan is like a road map leading you to where you are going in your business. It will help you know where you are at any point in time. Hence your business plan should include:
1. Type of Bird you want to concentrate on –
Here you choose Chickens (Layers and Broilers). We choose chicken because that’s what this article focuses on. There are other types of birds that are good for livestock business too, such as Goose, Duck, Turkey, etc.
2. Write down your area of interest –
You can’t just be in all aspect of poultry farming. You have to choose your area of interest where you would like to concentrate your business. This will ensure high level of focus and professionalism. If you can do two area, no problem. Below are some of the major Niches in Poultry Farming
- Layers Breeding which is egg production by Layers
- Broilers breeding which referrers to the chicken meat production by Broilers
- Hatchery which has to do with breeding chicken for the purpose of Hatching new chicks
- Poultry feed which is producing feeds for other poultry farmers
You may choose to Breed Layers and Broilers at a time or one of them. Hatchery is better done independently just like feed production. So, you choose your area of focus
3. Sort out Location –
This has a direct effect to your startup cost. A location in a very remote rural area will cost far less than the one close to the urban area. Remote rural area with good road is the ideal location as you will be free from regulatory agencies and drive down the cost of labor too.
As a new person to Livestock business, you don’t want to invest all your capital into buying lands in urban area which may turn out not being used because Government policy is against setting up poultry farm near residential/urban areas for health implication.
4. Investment Capital –
With location in mind, you now have clearer idea of the capital required of you. Write down your detailed capital and investment requirements and set to source it.
Like every other farming projects, the bigger you plan to start, the more investment required. You need to decide on the level of capital investment you are willing to commit into this business before starting.
(a) Small scale Chicken Rearing (of about 50 birds) kept in cages at the backyard of your resident will take about N70,000 to start.
(b) A medium scale poultry farming that requires land and housing and other materials in 1 – 2 plots of Land takes about N500,000 to N5 Million to start.
(c) Large scale or Intensive poultry farming that requires high level of sophistication and more careful planning and professionalism, using advance Livestock farming techniques takes from N10 Million.
Set Up Your Poultry Farming
With your business plan is in place, the next is to proceed to setting up your farm without delay! At this point, it is my believe that you already have the money in your hands. So here are the things you need to acquire and put in place.
1. Buy land – Like we said earlier, look for land in a remote location but make sure it’s not too far from the city. A place like Ijebu Ode, Remo Area, Imota in Ikorodu – these places are perfect if you are in Lagos. Other places like towards Oshogbo after Ibadan isn’t too far too from the major city like Ibadan.
You can get Acre of land there for cheap price, cost of lands in most cases is determined by the sellers. But we may suggest price during commenting. So drop your comments below and let’s get the discussion going.
2. Build your Structure – House is very important for chicken rearing and effective keeping and management. Poultry housing are classified according to the scale and the management system. The most common types of poultry housing used in Nigeria are:
• Deep litter-
• Half litter and half slats –
• Battery –
• Semi-fold –
Buy day old chick – Look for good Hatchery where you can get healthy day old chicks to start with. It costs from N140 to N200 sometimes up to N300
Other Items you need – Feeders, Drinkers, Perches. Nests, Crates, Lighting system, Waste disposal system, Incubator, Heaters or brooders, Egg tray, Cages and coops.

How do I prevent my chickens from dying? Would my chicken house have to be constructed with bricks or do I put a heater in there?

2. How do l construct a pen house with all the necessary requirements (water, feed, etc) or do you have anyone l can contact?
3. In cases of power failure, any alternative?
4. How long does it take for the bird to start laying?

John, coming back home to invest is a very good idea because no place like your father land, it's something we have been encouraging through this website and we are happy you guys are responding to it. One thing I certainly will not do is getting back to people who dropped their emails here. If you receive any email, be sure that it's not from me. Understand that fraudsters are always on the lookout for peoples' contacts to see the possibility of defrauding them through it. I don't want anyone to be a victim that's why I frown at adding email or phone number to a comment. So, I advice you guys to always make comments without adding your email addresses on the comment body. Thank you!

Hi, i have just read most of your blog and will like to say it has given me a lot to think about starting a poultry farm which although i have been interested in.
I really want to come back home to start something like this after spending a long time overseas.
However, I dont have the experience as such but have worked for a large company here who deal with poultry farming materials.
It is very difficult to get good advice from fellow Nigerians but it seems things are changing for the best.
Setting up a poultry farm of about 2000 birds to start with is my ideal number but i could be wrong and that is why I need your help and experience advice to start with.
I know that it may cost me for your advice but its better for it to cost me less than to lose a lot.
My name is John please get back to me if possible.
Many Thanks.

Darlinton says
Poor management is the reason many people experience loss in their business. Poultry is one of the most profitable business but you need to manage it well if you want to attain huge gain. For your chicken to do well, it need proper feeding, proper disease control, good vaccination, and proper housing.
Again, many people finds it so hard to invest in knowledge; instead they prefer to go into the business with little or no knowledge. How could someone going into huge business as poultry find it difficult to buy Poultry eBooks or get training? When you find it so hard to invest in knowledge, then expect losses.

Darlinton says
N500,000 will go a long way to establish your farm especially if you can get your land for cheap price (less than N100,000) in that case, the money you have will be more than enough for a medium farm.
However, the money wouldn't be enough if you add fencing except you are fencing with local material. Yes, you can do without fencing but fencing make your farm more secure.
If your wife is to return home after the day work, you need to hire a trusted person or a guard who will be there to guide your poultry else they will use your chicken and do pepper soup.
Prince Nwosu says
Greetings mr Darlinton. Thank you for the vital life changing informations. I came accross your blug from google search. Pls i have 3 important questions before i finally decide for this investment and purchase the e-book.
1. I stay in a rented apartment at ojodu berger in lagos and will be starting with N500,000. I will need to buy a land in the remote area of ikorodu or ogun state as mentioned in the blug. I beleive the land will require fensing, pen house and the chicken cages in addition to other items mentioned. Can N500k do all these as i know land and fensing alone can gulp up to 400k. Or can one do without the fensing in the remote area in the bush?
2. Secondly, my wife will manage the place and be coming from ojodu and return in the evening. Are we going to require a night guard?
I need to be sure N500k can carry before i venture. Thank you for your anticipated response.
Jerry Prince.

There is no market for geese and duck in Nigeria in my own opinion. Nigerians aren't used to eating duck that much though some do but are in the minority compared to chicken consumers. You can invest in quail and chicken that's where the market is in Nigeria.
However, great possibilities may exist in there. Who knows if well introduced it may gain market appeal. If you want we could carryout the market research for you?

I am a poultry and hatchery owner in Ukraine.I raise parent livestocks of geese and ducks with hatchery capacity of 300,000 for the past 16 years. The know how is there. Please do you think this area could be of success in Nigeria ?
Darlinton says
You need to step up your security before people run down your investment. It is always better if you can manage your poultry yourself instead of entrusting it completely into the hands of workers.
But have you made sure snake is not having access to the pen? Snake could cause serious damage if they gain entry. If possible, fence the farm and try to keep it clean at all times and pay closer attention to your staffs.
@o'funmi, if you are starting at your backyard you need to start small and N150K is more than enough to start small. With time you can move elsewhere when your poultry starts getting bigger and the smell starts disturbing.

Hi Darlington,
What an impressive information you are dishing out here. Loving you for this.
I had a sting on poultry farming (very small scale) with a pal many years ago. The land and setting are still there wasting away bcos I moved out of the country and the guy got preoccupied with his normal profession…so we abandoned the project after splitting the "fruits of our labor/input" if you know what i mean.
Recently I have been thinking of going back to it this time for good likewise my pal. He was bequeathed with the farmland.
My question is ….Is it advisable to go into poultry, piggery, fishery at the same time? Bearing in mind that we haven't got all the capital in this world for a big project. What i am thinking of, is that a little bit of this and a little bit of that, we can both pull it together and then grow bigger.
Awaiting your response.

Yeah, lots of hard work but plenty of gain. Do you raise them for the meat or the eggs?
Darlinton says
Some go for the Indigenous Free Range while some prefer Exotic Chickens, popularly known as Agric Fowl. They are all good. If you can get Californian While, better

Please,Is it advisable to start a poultry farm very close to one's residence even in a rural area?
Darlinton says
Make sure they are vaccinated, properly feed, and control the temperature of their pen with light. Overall, good management is what can prevent them from getting ill.

Thank you Augustina, The poultry farm you see on the picture is a big poultry farm house capable of housing thousands of chicken. If you are eying that size, your budget should start from N10,000,000.
There are professional consultants, some of whom may show up here as the time goes on. This article was once full of comments from professional consultants and experienced poultry farmers. Unfortunately we lost those comments due to technical movement.

Thanx a lot Mr. Darlinton for your impressive post. i'm really looking forward for your robust ebook. My question are three.
1. how much will it cost to build a standard poultry like the one shown on your post(for both broilers and layers). also, what quantity of land will u advice(e.g. 1hectare or 2hectare or more)
2. since we are novice to these business, how do we know the feed combinations for the poultry animals and feed mixing processes.
3. do you know one or two consultants by which you could refer us to? The one that will guide us as we start from d root.
Thanx

N3 Million will go along way specially if you already have a land. But I think you can get land in Oshogbo very cheap so N3m will definitely go a very long way.

Wow, your article came at the right time, cos am planning to start my own poultry farming somewhere in Oshogbo(but i reside in Lagos).
How far do you think i can go with a start-up capital of #3m, moreover am also planning to get a pickup truck for effective distribution of my produce. Please how viable do you think this will be.
Thanks so much.

You can get large farmland at cheap price in many part of Ogun State that is if you are in Lagos. But if you are in other states, just go to the nearby rural area, you will get large farmland to buy or let at cheap rate.

Chickens at different stages of development require different feed.
1. Day-old chicks through 8 weeks old require starter feed containing 20% protein. Starter feed contains the highest percentage of protein a layer will ever consume, which makes sense given their astronomical rate of growth in the first few months of life.
2. Layer feed should never be fed to chickens younger than 18 weeks
3. Give Layer feed from 18 months
4. Layer feed contains 16-18% protein plus added calcium, which is necessary for eggshell production
Nasiru says
Thanks for ur answer. Like from day one to day 7 from day 7 to three weeks
Darlinton says
The quantity you give depends on the age of the chicken
But the common rule is to give what they can exhaust
or 1.5 lbs per bird per week
