Boko Haram launches attack on Biu, routed by Nigerian troops


The Islamic sect, this morning launched an attack on a checkpoint near the Army Barracks in Biu Local Government Area of Borno state.

Biu is said to be the second largest council area in Borno state and is about 185 kilometres south of Maiduguri.

According to the residents, the militants came through the Garkida-Yimirshika-Biu road and made efforts to invade the military barracks that isĀ  along the road but the red alert military and some civilians encountered them with fierce gun battles.

Five of the militants were captured while the others were chased out of the town by the military.

The casualty figures are presently yet to be ascertained as the communities around the area are said to be fleeing for safety.

The 7 Division, Nigerian Army Maiduguri confirmed the incident, with an assurance that the military are on top of the situation.
