Benefits of Shutting off the News

September 26, 2021 by romy

Watching the news or reading about it is a great way to stay informed about what is going on in your own city, state, or country as well as other parts of the world; there is no argument against that being a factual statement. However, indulging in the news too often or spending a lot of time learning about everything around you can actually begin to go backwards in effects. Why is this?

Well, have you ever started to feel panicked or overall stressed when you start thinking about everything else in the world or your area and how it could impact you or your family? It has been shown that many of us are in fact taking up too much time and energy on the news nowadays, and turning it off will actually reap benefits. Here are some benefits of shutting off the news.

Reduce Information Dependence

Indulging ourselves in information on social media about celebrity and friends’ lives, constantly engaging in the news stories about the entire world, and so on actually can create information dependence in our mind. This means that you will feel a need and attachment to be given more information and stay wrapped up in this factory of news and fear. Taking a while to break from this will be difficult at first, but it will actually reduce that dependence you have and make it easier to step away after one news story or a little time on social media than it is now.

Be There

It’s not a secret that any time we spend on something will take away time from another thing we could be doing. Like how spending time on electronics or news stories takes away from things you could do like your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, getting outdoors, taking care of yourself, and so much more. So trying to shut that news off more often means you can truly be more present in your own moments and life instead of watching news or mentally still focused on the news when you are doing other things. It can make tasks easier and so much else.

Breathe Easier

Stress limits our functions and health from many aspects. It can attack our mood, mentality, breathing, physical health, and so on (depending on how stressed you are and how often you are feeling that level of worry or fear). Taking that time to remove this stress inducing habit of consistent news watching-because electronics cause your body to emit stress chemicals even if you don’t actually feel stressed-will help to give your body time to heal and reverse those limitations that negative hormones and chemicals started.

This doesn’t mean that you have to turn off the news channel, social media, disregard newspapers, and shut yourself off at all times or drastically in your life. It just means that taking a break from all that information and fear factors can truly benefit you in more ways than most of us can imagine. When is the last time you just relaxed without the thoughts in the back of your head about what’s happening in our world or your community or state?

We all need a break from this chaos once in a while, especially because much of the things we see on the news are already happening or did happen and individuals watching don’t actually have any way to impact or reverse the event. You don’t have to turn it off always. Just try to be informed in moderation.
