It was a scene of terror at the early hours of today in the Ipakodo area of Ikorodu as Armed Robbers led by a Female gang leader stormed two banks in the area and made away with untold millions of Naira.
The two affected banks are Zenith Bank and FirstBank both directly facing the Ipakodo police station at the Nigerian Port Authority terminal in Ikorodu. The robbery went on for more than one hour with absolutely no resistance from the police. We personally saw some of the policemen on duty jump through the fence and took to their heel.
After the robbery, the robbers snatched two SUV’s from passerby, used it to convey the stolen money to the seaside where they boarded their speed boats and set those three cars ablaze.
It was two hours after the robbers had left before policemen and some soldiers arrived the scene. As soon as they entered, they started harassing the innocent passerby and chasing people standing by the vicinity away. I tried speaking with one of the police officer who declined to make a meaningful comment about the incident, instead, asked me to write a report. When I asked him where should I submit the report he responded “to the press” and smiled.
Similar attack happened not long ago in the Ijede area of the same Ikorodu where gang of armed robber led by same female gang leader invaded the First Bank branch in Omitoro and Wema Bank branch in Ijede. Both attack were successful with no hindrance whatsoever from the Nigerian police forces.
We though police would have anticipated this attack and reenforced security in all the banks situated close to Lagoon areas in Lagos and other places. Most of the banks in Ikorodu are currently under locks and keys, while shops and other businesses close to the attack zone also closed for the day. See pictures that shows the aftermath of the event.
