#12: Embroidered Denim
Decorated denim started appearing around 1967 as young people began customizing their jeans and jackets at home. Plain blue denim was easy to find in thrift shops and army surplus stores, which made it the perfect blank canvas. With needles, thread, and colorful yarn, wearers stitched flowers, suns, and peace signs across pockets and sleeves. Women led the trend at first, though men joined in.
