Extinct: Only Known Photo of a Living ‘Quagga’
This isn’t something you’ll see every day…in fact, you won’t see this animal AT ALL. This is the last and only known photo of a living Quagga. This photograph was taken at the London zoo, back in 1870. The Quagga was a plains zebra that lived in South Africa before becoming extinct some time in the latter part of the 19th century.
Initially, experts believed the animal to be of its own species, but genetic studies ultimately decided it was a subspecies of the far more common plains zebra. Either way, it is extremely sad to see an animal we know could have been a part of our world, but sadly is no more.
